EXPERIMENTS : ADULTERATION
We conducted a interactive seminar on adulteration on 16th April 2012 on Adulteration at Kendriya Vidyalaya Kanjikode, in which we conducted the following experiments :
3) Chalk Powder
4) Iron Fillings
5) Water Soluble Coaltar Color
6) Invert Sugar
7) Mineral Acid
Sugar, Icing Sugar
Boil sample with some water in a test tube, cocl and add a few drops of iodine solution. Appearance of blue color indicates the presence of starch
A drop of pure milk on a clean polished surface either stops or flows slowly leaving a white trail, whereas adulterated milk will flow immediately without leaving a mark.
About 10 gm sample is dissolved in water. Chalk will settle down.
Easily traced with the magnet
Sprinkle powder on water. The water soluble color will immediately start descending in colored streaks
A cotton wick dipped in pure honey when lighted burns smoothly. If water is presently it will not allow the honey to burn, even if it does, crackling sound will be produced.
Tested with the metanil yellow indicator paper, in case the color changes from yellow to pink, mineral acid is present.
Sprinkle coffee powder on surface of water in a glass. Coffee floats while chicory starts sinking down leaving a trail of color, due to large amount of caramol.
